Narrative:
Departed lax for mexico. Given 250 KT speed restr by socal. Restr deleted out of 8000 ft. First officer flying. Momentarily thinking we were above 10000 ft, started increase to normal climb speed. I was looking at chart for radial from mzb to tij. It is only 20 mi leg and difficult to see. Then came a frequency change before we both noticed the aircraft now at 300 KTS at 8500 ft. The first officer climbed immediately to reduce speed to 250 KTS. No conflict occurred. Ways to prevent: verbalizing intentions, mode control with autothrottle engaged would have required noticeable physical movement to change speed, increased vigilance by all of us.
