Narrative:
Flight from flint, mi, to pittsburgh, PA, we encountered moderate turbulence at FL210. We asked for ride reports, however we were told that we were 'leading the pack.' we requested a lower altitude from ZOB. They gave us 17000 ft. While passing through FL180 the altimeter setting was given. Due to the turbulence and rapid descent rate the altimeter setting was not understood except xx.34. I, as the PF tuned 30.34. At approximately 17300 ft MSL, the captain corrected the setting to 29.34. The new altimeter setting caused the actual altitude to be lower than the 17000 ft selected altitude causing the autoplt not to capture. At 16500 ft I disconnected the autoplt and immediately returned to 17000 ft. Cleveland then cleared us to 15000 ft at our discretion.

Title: DO328 ACFT IN CRUISE ENCOUNTERED MODERATE TURB AND REQUESTED LOWER ALT. ATC CLRED ACFT TO 17000 FT AND PF, FO MISHEARD ALT SETTING AND DSNDED 500 FT BELOW ASSIGNED UNTIL CAPT CORRECTED THE SETTING.
Narrative: FLT FROM FLINT, MI, TO PITTSBURGH, PA, WE ENCOUNTERED MODERATE TURB AT FL210. WE ASKED FOR RIDE RPTS, HOWEVER WE WERE TOLD THAT WE WERE 'LEADING THE PACK.' WE REQUESTED A LOWER ALT FROM ZOB. THEY GAVE US 17000 FT. WHILE PASSING THROUGH FL180 THE ALTIMETER SETTING WAS GIVEN. DUE TO THE TURB AND RAPID DSCNT RATE THE ALTIMETER SETTING WAS NOT UNDERSTOOD EXCEPT XX.34. I, AS THE PF TUNED 30.34. AT APPROX 17300 FT MSL, THE CAPT CORRECTED THE SETTING TO 29.34. THE NEW ALTIMETER SETTING CAUSED THE ACTUAL ALT TO BE LOWER THAN THE 17000 FT SELECTED ALT CAUSING THE AUTOPLT NOT TO CAPTURE. AT 16500 FT I DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO 17000 FT. CLEVELAND THEN CLRED US TO 15000 FT AT OUR DISCRETION.
