Narrative:
While in the ramp area, inbound to gate, the aircraft experienced an APU automatic shutdown followed by an APU fault message annunciation. After parking at the gate, we were informed by ground personnel that they had seen fire and smoke coming from the right rear side of the aircraft. I told the first officer to call for fire/rescue equipment and made a PA announcement instructing the flight attendants to get everyone off the aircraft through the main cabin door. Passenger started to exit the aircraft via the main cabin door and overwing hatches. At no time were passenger ever ordered by me or the flight attendants to evacuate/evacuation over the wings. Approximately 15- 20 people exited over wing before we could stop this method of egress and get the rest of the passenger out the main cabin door. Station personnel got all passenger safely inside the terminal where only one person reported an apparently minor injury. She was treated by paramedics.
