Narrative:

Runway 11L used for departure with tus 6 departure, gbn transition. First assigned heading 120 degrees by tower prior to takeoff. Routine takeoff and cleanup was followed by what both the PF and PNF interpreted to be instructions by departure control to 'turn left' heading 290 degrees. PF (captain) initiated a gradual turn to assigned heading. As the heading of the aircraft was going through approximately 360 degrees, the departure controller stated that the direction to turn was supposed to be a right turn. Controller was queried as to whether any traffic conflict had occurred to which he replied 'negative, continue left turn to 270 degrees.'
