Narrative:
I was flying from plymouth, ma, to manchester, nh, VFR. I called boston approach for transition through class B airspace at 3000 ft MSL. I made the call south of cranland as indicated above. The controller gave me barometer at boston which I set in. She said she would call with a transponder code which she did. The clearance I heard was, 'cleared through bravo airspace.' I proceeded to brockton at 3000 ft on course direct to manchester. ATC asked me my altitude. I said 3000 ft. She said I was in boston airspace and my clearance was 'remain clear of bravo airspace.' she may have, also, told me to 'stay west or outside of the needham towers.' my reply was 'descending to 2500 ft.' she handed me off to another controller. I heard the new controller inform his traffic that boston's primary radar was inoperative, and there was no direct transit through boston.

Title: C172 PLT PERFORMS AN UNAUTH PENETRATION OF CLASS B AIRSPACE AFTER CTLR INSTRUCTS HIM TO 'REMAIN CLR OF BRAVO AIRSPACE.'
Narrative: I WAS FLYING FROM PLYMOUTH, MA, TO MANCHESTER, NH, VFR. I CALLED BOSTON APCH FOR TRANSITION THROUGH CLASS B AIRSPACE AT 3000 FT MSL. I MADE THE CALL S OF CRANLAND AS INDICATED ABOVE. THE CTLR GAVE ME BAROMETER AT BOSTON WHICH I SET IN. SHE SAID SHE WOULD CALL WITH A XPONDER CODE WHICH SHE DID. THE CLRNC I HEARD WAS, 'CLRED THROUGH BRAVO AIRSPACE.' I PROCEEDED TO BROCKTON AT 3000 FT ON COURSE DIRECT TO MANCHESTER. ATC ASKED ME MY ALT. I SAID 3000 FT. SHE SAID I WAS IN BOSTON AIRSPACE AND MY CLRNC WAS 'REMAIN CLR OF BRAVO AIRSPACE.' SHE MAY HAVE, ALSO, TOLD ME TO 'STAY W OR OUTSIDE OF THE NEEDHAM TWRS.' MY REPLY WAS 'DSNDING TO 2500 FT.' SHE HANDED ME OFF TO ANOTHER CTLR. I HEARD THE NEW CTLR INFORM HIS TFC THAT BOSTON'S PRIMARY RADAR WAS INOP, AND THERE WAS NO DIRECT TRANSIT THROUGH BOSTON.
