Narrative:
We were climbing out of FL290, talking to ZME, heading 230 degrees direct to hou from mystic VOR. At FL290 the autoplt began a severe turn to the right, and about 15-20 degrees to the right the pilot turned the autoplt off and began the turn back to 230 degrees. Center called and said do not turn unless notifying center. We replied by stating: the autoplt malfunctioned and the altered heading was not intentional nor necessary. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states that the bendix unit has been overhauled and there are no further problems. The altitude hold had worn and failed. The aircraft was a citation 500.
