Narrative:
On takeoff, upper door latch failed. Lower door latch remained secure. Rush of air from loose door seal impacted mikes, making radio communications/intercom transmission difficult -- nothing but static could be heard, with very intermittent reception. Communications with approach control could not be established. After climbing 400 ft AGL, pilot deviated from runway heading instructions at takeoff clearance by turning left to a heading of approximately 210 degrees to avoid traffic at mcn. Pilot attempted to establish radio communications with departure control on second communications radio with no success. Pilot broadcast on last assigned approach control frequency that communication problems were being experienced. Pilot diverted to pxe (class east airspace) in order to avoid high density traffic at wrb and mcn. On return flight, ATC advised that original departure deviation had placed aircraft in close proximity to another aircraft. Distance and altitude of other aircraft was not received or acknowledged by this pilot.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A PA28-161 PLT CHOSE A DIVERSION TO ALTERNATE WHEN THE UPPER DOOR LATCH FAILED PREVENTING COM.
Narrative: ON TKOF, UPPER DOOR LATCH FAILED. LOWER DOOR LATCH REMAINED SECURE. RUSH OF AIR FROM LOOSE DOOR SEAL IMPACTED MIKES, MAKING RADIO COMS/INTERCOM XMISSION DIFFICULT -- NOTHING BUT STATIC COULD BE HEARD, WITH VERY INTERMITTENT RECEPTION. COMS WITH APCH CTL COULD NOT BE ESTABLISHED. AFTER CLBING 400 FT AGL, PLT DEVIATED FROM RWY HDG INSTRUCTIONS AT TKOF CLRNC BY TURNING L TO A HDG OF APPROX 210 DEGS TO AVOID TFC AT MCN. PLT ATTEMPTED TO ESTABLISH RADIO COMS WITH DEP CTL ON SECOND COMS RADIO WITH NO SUCCESS. PLT BROADCAST ON LAST ASSIGNED APCH CTL FREQ THAT COM PROBS WERE BEING EXPERIENCED. PLT DIVERTED TO PXE (CLASS E AIRSPACE) IN ORDER TO AVOID HIGH DENSITY TFC AT WRB AND MCN. ON RETURN FLT, ATC ADVISED THAT ORIGINAL DEP DEV HAD PLACED ACFT IN CLOSE PROX TO ANOTHER ACFT. DISTANCE AND ALT OF OTHER ACFT WAS NOT RECEIVED OR ACKNOWLEDGED BY THIS PLT.
