Narrative:
We were cleared to descend from 11000 ft to 9000 ft at a point in the arrival when you are normally cleared to 7000 ft. Mentally I thought we were cleared to 7000 ft and discovered the error only after descending through the altitude on the altitude alerter. A timely correction to 9000 ft was made. Complacency and breakdown in crew coordination were contributing factors. Supplemental information from acn 359646: the captain (PF) then noticed that we had descended through our assigned altitude to 8500 ft. We climbed back up to 9000 ft without incident. Because we were flying with a so on his first trip since his IOE, we (the captain and I) were doing a lot more explaining about normal procedures.

Title: B727 FLC HAS A MENTAL IMAGE OF DSNDING TO 7000 FT IN N90 AIRSPACE. FO CATCHES THE ERROR AT 8500 FT AND THE CAPT CLBS THE ACFT BACK 9000 FT.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED TO DSND FROM 11000 FT TO 9000 FT AT A POINT IN THE ARR WHEN YOU ARE NORMALLY CLRED TO 7000 FT. MENTALLY I THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED TO 7000 FT AND DISCOVERED THE ERROR ONLY AFTER DSNDING THROUGH THE ALT ON THE ALT ALERTER. A TIMELY CORRECTION TO 9000 FT WAS MADE. COMPLACENCY AND BREAKDOWN IN CREW COORD WERE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 359646: THE CAPT (PF) THEN NOTICED THAT WE HAD DSNDED THROUGH OUR ASSIGNED ALT TO 8500 FT. WE CLBED BACK UP TO 9000 FT WITHOUT INCIDENT. BECAUSE WE WERE FLYING WITH A SO ON HIS FIRST TRIP SINCE HIS IOE, WE (THE CAPT AND I) WERE DOING A LOT MORE EXPLAINING ABOUT NORMAL PROCS.
