Narrative:
High fast approach to runway 12, unable to land safely (high sink rate, likely very long touchdown). Requested and received tower permission to abandon landing and land instead on runway 1R. Circled at 300 ft AGL, used 35 degrees to align with runway, touched down normally at 3000 ft from threshold. Contributing: first officer flying, distracted by navigation presentation problem on ehsi, captain trying to talk him through side slip to bleed altitude and airspeed, captain decision to continue through to runway 1R landing. Both pilots tired after 4 hours sleep on 'standup overnight.' either pilot should have called for go around rather than try to salvage a bad landing approach. Cockpit complacency (familiarity in type and non standard procedural sequence) contributing factors.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN ACR TWIN TURBOPROP MADE A 300 FT AGL CIRCLING VISUAL APCH AFTER THEY WERE TOO HIGH AND FAST TO LAND ON THE ORIGINALLY CLRED RWY. THE CAPT BELIEVES THAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SAFER TO HAVE GONE AROUND INSTEAD!
Narrative: HIGH FAST APCH TO RWY 12, UNABLE TO LAND SAFELY (HIGH SINK RATE, LIKELY VERY LONG TOUCHDOWN). REQUESTED AND RECEIVED TWR PERMISSION TO ABANDON LNDG AND LAND INSTEAD ON RWY 1R. CIRCLED AT 300 FT AGL, USED 35 DEGS TO ALIGN WITH RWY, TOUCHED DOWN NORMALLY AT 3000 FT FROM THRESHOLD. CONTRIBUTING: FO FLYING, DISTRACTED BY NAV PRESENTATION PROB ON EHSI, CAPT TRYING TO TALK HIM THROUGH SIDE SLIP TO BLEED ALT AND AIRSPD, CAPT DECISION TO CONTINUE THROUGH TO RWY 1R LNDG. BOTH PLTS TIRED AFTER 4 HRS SLEEP ON 'STANDUP OVERNIGHT.' EITHER PLT SHOULD HAVE CALLED FOR GAR RATHER THAN TRY TO SALVAGE A BAD LNDG APCH. COCKPIT COMPLACENCY (FAMILIARITY IN TYPE AND NON STANDARD PROCEDURAL SEQUENCE) CONTRIBUTING FACTORS.
