Narrative:
We were level at 9000 ft. Controller cleared us to 10000 ft. PNF read back 11000 ft and put 11000 ft in the altitude preselector. I asked PNF if 11000 ft was the assigned altitude and he replied 'yes 11000 ft.' climbing out of 10400 ft the controller told us to descend and maintain 10000 ft immediately. The controller said the 1000 ft separation was not compromised but our clearance was to 10000 ft, not 11000 ft. Contributing factors: we are usually cleared from 9000 ft to 11000 ft not 10000 ft. PNF read back 11000 ft and controller did not catch it. PF (me) thought I heard 10000 ft but did not ask PNF to verify altitude with controller.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN CPR SMT TWIN TURBOPROP, OVERSHOT CLB ALT DUE TO MISUNDERSTANDING THE ASSIGNED ALT AND SETTING THEIR ALT ALERTER ACCORDINGLY. THE CTLR ALSO DID NOT RESPOND TO THE FO'S INCORRECT READBACK!
Narrative: WE WERE LEVEL AT 9000 FT. CTLR CLRED US TO 10000 FT. PNF READ BACK 11000 FT AND PUT 11000 FT IN THE ALT PRESELECTOR. I ASKED PNF IF 11000 FT WAS THE ASSIGNED ALT AND HE REPLIED 'YES 11000 FT.' CLBING OUT OF 10400 FT THE CTLR TOLD US TO DSND AND MAINTAIN 10000 FT IMMEDIATELY. THE CTLR SAID THE 1000 FT SEPARATION WAS NOT COMPROMISED BUT OUR CLRNC WAS TO 10000 FT, NOT 11000 FT. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: WE ARE USUALLY CLRED FROM 9000 FT TO 11000 FT NOT 10000 FT. PNF READ BACK 11000 FT AND CTLR DID NOT CATCH IT. PF (ME) THOUGHT I HEARD 10000 FT BUT DID NOT ASK PNF TO VERIFY ALT WITH CTLR.
