Narrative:
Mizar.MIZAR2 arrival dtw. Cleared to cross mizar at 12000 ft and 250 KTS. Advised to expect ILS runway 3L dtw. After multiple vectors and altitude assignments, controller advised air crew that new approach would be to ILS runway 3R dtw. When localizer for runway 3R was approached without approach clearance, first officer asked controller for ILS runway 3R ILS approach clearance. Controller cleared air crew to intercept localizer for ILS runway 3L. First officer stated that we were to be given ILS runway 3R. Controller asked if we were capable of ILS runway 3L. At this time we advised controller that runway 3L ILS was not acceptable and requested clearance for ILS runway 3R. Controller apologized and cleared us to the ILS runway 3R approach and told us to slow to final approach speed. On approximately 1.2 mi final, after being cleared to land, the DC9 in front of us missed the turnoff and we were instructed by dtw tower to go around.

Title: FLC OF A B727 WERE INSTRUCTED BY TWR TO MAKE A MISSED APCH DUE TO A DC9 ON THE RWY. ATC MAINTAINED NORMAL SEPARATION EVEN THOUGH UNDER A WORKLOAD OF CONGESTED TFC.
Narrative: MIZAR.MIZAR2 ARR DTW. CLRED TO CROSS MIZAR AT 12000 FT AND 250 KTS. ADVISED TO EXPECT ILS RWY 3L DTW. AFTER MULTIPLE VECTORS AND ALT ASSIGNMENTS, CTLR ADVISED AIR CREW THAT NEW APCH WOULD BE TO ILS RWY 3R DTW. WHEN LOC FOR RWY 3R WAS APCHED WITHOUT APCH CLRNC, FO ASKED CTLR FOR ILS RWY 3R ILS APCH CLRNC. CTLR CLRED AIR CREW TO INTERCEPT LOC FOR ILS RWY 3L. FO STATED THAT WE WERE TO BE GIVEN ILS RWY 3R. CTLR ASKED IF WE WERE CAPABLE OF ILS RWY 3L. AT THIS TIME WE ADVISED CTLR THAT RWY 3L ILS WAS NOT ACCEPTABLE AND REQUESTED CLRNC FOR ILS RWY 3R. CTLR APOLOGIZED AND CLRED US TO THE ILS RWY 3R APCH AND TOLD US TO SLOW TO FINAL APCH SPD. ON APPROX 1.2 MI FINAL, AFTER BEING CLRED TO LAND, THE DC9 IN FRONT OF US MISSED THE TURNOFF AND WE WERE INSTRUCTED BY DTW TWR TO GAR.
