Narrative:

This was the second leg of a 3 leg trip for this day. We were en route from northeast philadelphia to denver when the route excursion occurred. After several frequency changes and vectors we were cleared on course (see enclosure). We were just east of the pensy intersection, pensy coordinates are not published on commercial publication charts so we were on the last heading until we could intercept J48. While we were getting out maps, turning radios, etc, we went several mi west of pensy before we were then cleared direct EMI. It was a VFR day and some of my attention was diverted outside of the aircraft for the see and avoid phase of flight. It was a very busy time in the cockpit and we ended up west of pensy. I do not think there was any traffic conflict but ATC did ask if we had started our turn to EMI yet, which we had not. Solutions: 1) situational awareness. 2) latitude and longitude for intxns on charts for dated equipment (INS). 3) controllers should not clear aircraft on course unless they are established on a route or going direct to a point. 4) sids for jets from busy airports. The clearance for this route was pne- apa runway heading (runway 33) for vectors to mxe, mxe 278 degree radial to intercept J48, J48 EMI direct mrb J6/134 stl direct mkc J80 fqf direct apa climb and maintain 2000 ft expect FL390 in 10 mins, departure frequency 123.8 squawk XXXX.

Title: CPR MLG CLRED ON COURSE PENSY INTXN TO J48 TO FPR. FLEW SEVERAL MI BY PENSY INTXN BEFORE CLRED DIRECT EMI TO FPR.

Narrative: THIS WAS THE SECOND LEG OF A 3 LEG TRIP FOR THIS DAY. WE WERE ENRTE FROM NE PHILADELPHIA TO DENVER WHEN THE RTE EXCURSION OCCURRED. AFTER SEVERAL FREQ CHANGES AND VECTORS WE WERE CLRED ON COURSE (SEE ENCLOSURE). WE WERE JUST E OF THE PENSY INTXN, PENSY COORDINATES ARE NOT PUBLISHED ON COMMERCIAL PUB CHARTS SO WE WERE ON THE LAST HEADING UNTIL WE COULD INTERCEPT J48. WHILE WE WERE GETTING OUT MAPS, TURNING RADIOS, ETC, WE WENT SEVERAL MI W OF PENSY BEFORE WE WERE THEN CLRED DIRECT EMI. IT WAS A VFR DAY AND SOME OF MY ATTN WAS DIVERTED OUTSIDE OF THE ACFT FOR THE SEE AND AVOID PHASE OF FLT. IT WAS A VERY BUSY TIME IN THE COCKPIT AND WE ENDED UP W OF PENSY. I DO NOT THINK THERE WAS ANY TFC CONFLICT BUT ATC DID ASK IF WE HAD STARTED OUR TURN TO EMI YET, WHICH WE HAD NOT. SOLUTIONS: 1) SITUATIONAL AWARENESS. 2) LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE FOR INTXNS ON CHARTS FOR DATED EQUIP (INS). 3) CTLRS SHOULD NOT CLR ACFT ON COURSE UNLESS THEY ARE ESTABLISHED ON A RTE OR GOING DIRECT TO A POINT. 4) SIDS FOR JETS FROM BUSY ARPTS. THE CLRNC FOR THIS RTE WAS PNE- APA RWY HEADING (RWY 33) FOR VECTORS TO MXE, MXE 278 DEG RADIAL TO INTERCEPT J48, J48 EMI DIRECT MRB J6/134 STL DIRECT MKC J80 FQF DIRECT APA CLB AND MAINTAIN 2000 FT EXPECT FL390 IN 10 MINS, DEP FREQ 123.8 SQUAWK XXXX.
