Narrative:
Location: dkk-eck. A very rough ride reported by all aircraft. Center reported FL180 smoother but with significant headwinds although unable to give specifics. Due to limited fuel and a reported better ride at FL390-FL410 we received clearance to FL370. We were still being bounced but a far better ride than any other altitude. As a precaution for altitude bust block FL370-FL390 was received. For a short time the aircraft ballooned to FL375. All passenger were seated with seat belt sign on, no injuries reported. As we were descending to FL370 frequency change was issued whereupon center questioned MD80 service ceiling. FL370 was response but I failed to think that an explanation of FL375 was in order. Flight was conducted safely as possible. Communication with center on my part could have been enhanced.
