Narrative:
ATC slowed us to 150 KTS at 3000 ft MSL, 10 NM out on the runway 31R localizer. Controller told us to turn to heading 170 degrees. This startled us as this would take us off the approach. I read back, 'you want us to turn to 170 degrees?' he replied in the affirmative. I repeated the clearance and complied. After the turn was completed, controller told us to maintain 3000 ft. Something still didn't seem right, so I asked the controller, 'let me make sure I've got this, you want us, air carrier Y, to turn to 170 degrees at 150 KTS and 3000 ft.' he replied 'no that was for another aircraft, turn to heading 130 degrees.' we did basically a 360 degree turn and completed the ILS to runway 31R. The controller seemed calm about the situation, leading me to believe he realized he had confused us with another company aircraft on frequency. I believed I should have made an inquiry in the beginning to the controller 'are you taking us off the approach?' this could have gotten the controller's attention sooner that we weren't the aircraft he was looking at on the scope.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ATR72 PIC PICKS UP AN ERROR ON THE PART OF THE APCH CTLR WHEN CTLR GETS ACR FLT NUMBERS MIXED UP.
Narrative: ATC SLOWED US TO 150 KTS AT 3000 FT MSL, 10 NM OUT ON THE RWY 31R LOC. CTLR TOLD US TO TURN TO HDG 170 DEGS. THIS STARTLED US AS THIS WOULD TAKE US OFF THE APCH. I READ BACK, 'YOU WANT US TO TURN TO 170 DEGS?' HE REPLIED IN THE AFFIRMATIVE. I REPEATED THE CLRNC AND COMPLIED. AFTER THE TURN WAS COMPLETED, CTLR TOLD US TO MAINTAIN 3000 FT. SOMETHING STILL DIDN'T SEEM RIGHT, SO I ASKED THE CTLR, 'LET ME MAKE SURE I'VE GOT THIS, YOU WANT US, ACR Y, TO TURN TO 170 DEGS AT 150 KTS AND 3000 FT.' HE REPLIED 'NO THAT WAS FOR ANOTHER ACFT, TURN TO HDG 130 DEGS.' WE DID BASICALLY A 360 DEG TURN AND COMPLETED THE ILS TO RWY 31R. THE CTLR SEEMED CALM ABOUT THE SIT, LEADING ME TO BELIEVE HE REALIZED HE HAD CONFUSED US WITH ANOTHER COMPANY ACFT ON FREQ. I BELIEVED I SHOULD HAVE MADE AN INQUIRY IN THE BEGINNING TO THE CTLR 'ARE YOU TAKING US OFF THE APCH?' THIS COULD HAVE GOTTEN THE CTLR'S ATTN SOONER THAT WE WEREN'T THE ACFT HE WAS LOOKING AT ON THE SCOPE.
