Narrative:
I check out potential renters who wish to rent an A36 bonanza owned by a personal friend of 30 yrs. I also give renters 6 months instrument checks and instruction as needed to maintain proficiency and currency in the A36. After 1 demonstration flight yesterday for a potential renter, the owner called me and informed me he thought the aircraft was overdue for annual inspection. At this I was somewhat unhappy to find that the owner didn't keep track of the due date for each next inspection. The aircraft was 8 days overdue. The owner took the aircraft off the line and arranged for a ferry permit to the maintenance facility on mar/mon/97. I recommend the FAA establish a system whereby a highly visible sticker is placed in a prominent place to indicate the annual or 100 hour inspection status of part 91 aircraft. Because the FARS do not require the logbooks to be aboard the aircraft, there should be some way to identify whether the aircraft is airworthy or out of license.

Title: BE36 FLOWN WHEN 8 DAYS PAST DUE FOR ANNUAL INSPECTION. RPTR PLT HAD NO WAY TO DETERMINE THE ACTUAL DUE DATE SINCE LOGBOOK NOT REQUIRED TO BE ON BOARD ACFT DURING HIS PREFLT. HE RECOMMENDS A DUE DATE WINDSHIELD STICKER AS THE AUTO MECHS PRACTICE.
