Narrative:
Left auburn for return flight to harvey. Noticed generator light on 5 mins out of auburn. Do visual scan of panel checking all switches. Lightly read over pilot operating handbook, scan for traffic, scan pilot operating handbook, scan for landmarks. Set VOR for paine (110.6). Divide attention between above. Not worried about generator failure (34 NM flight) but still pay attention to it. Call sea approach -- no reply. Realize flight taking too long, VOR not responding, no landmarks I recognize. Fuel showing empty, no radio. Called sea approach and whidbey approach -- no reply light on transponder and lost. Looked for landing area and picked straight road with headlights. Circled a while at 1500 ft and landed south flow on interstate. Taxied with police assistance 1 mi sbound to exit to side road north to barker field.
