Air Traffic Incident | Operational Error |
Narrative:
While holding at macey intersection level at 15000 ft. Left hand turns. ATC cleared us to turn direct macey intersection and exit holding. (No altitude change given.) speed not to exceed 280 KTS. While complying with clearance traffic was observed on TCASII descending 800 ft above our aircraft. Shortly after, RA to descend was received. Autoplt was disconnected and a descent initiated to 14000 ft. Cockpit jump seat rider onboard (a flight safety coordinator) observed entire incident. Aircraft with RA was also in holding pattern being stepped down.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD88 LEAVING THE HOLDING PATTERN AT 15000 FT RECEIVED A TCASII RA FROM AN ACFT 800 FT ABOVE AND DSNDING. THE MD88 PLT REACTED TO THE RA AND DSNDED.
Narrative: WHILE HOLDING AT MACEY INTXN LEVEL AT 15000 FT. L HAND TURNS. ATC CLRED US TO TURN DIRECT MACEY INTXN AND EXIT HOLDING. (NO ALT CHANGE GIVEN.) SPD NOT TO EXCEED 280 KTS. WHILE COMPLYING WITH CLRNC TFC WAS OBSERVED ON TCASII DSNDING 800 FT ABOVE OUR ACFT. SHORTLY AFTER, RA TO DSND WAS RECEIVED. AUTOPLT WAS DISCONNECTED AND A DSCNT INITIATED TO 14000 FT. COCKPIT JUMP SEAT RIDER ONBOARD (A FLT SAFETY COORDINATOR) OBSERVED ENTIRE INCIDENT. ACFT WITH RA WAS ALSO IN HOLDING PATTERN BEING STEPPED DOWN.
