Narrative:
Was in level flight at FL190 just starting cartr 1 arrival when loud bang/pop occurred in left engine followed by flame coming out of exhaust stacks. Engine immediately shut down. Emergency shutdown checklist followed and emergency declared with approach control. Offered airports at bringham city and ogden. Because of 1) high altitude, 2) short distance to slc (40 mi), and 3) much better emergency equipment I elected to proceed to slc. Given straight-in to runway 17, other traffic diverted (they were taking off runway 34/35). Made uneventful single engine landing and cleared runway before shutdown of second engine. Found to have power turbine section failure of engine.
