Narrative:
Location: dfw. XXXY was cleared for the runway 17R approach. XXXX was on the same approach frequency as well. We heard approach tell XXXX to plan runway 18R. XXXX was cleared to runway 18R. A few mins later runway 17R. When questioned by XXXX the approach was changed runway 18R. While XXXY was established on runway 17R ILS as cleared, approach questioned if we were intercepting the runway 18R ILS. We stated no, we were cleared for the runway 17R ILS. Approach then cleared us for the runway 18R ILS. We asked for the runway 18R ILS frequency and proceeded to intercept. At 7 DME did not seem to be in a position for safe landing and broke off approach. Due to frequency congestion it took some time to relay this to controller. During our go around and subsequent approach, control appeared to still confuse our flight XXXX with flight XXXY. Suggest that flight numbers not be similar for flts that could depart and arrive at similar times.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MD80S ON APCH VECTORS. CALL SIGN SIMILAR WITH ANOTHER ACFT ON SAME FREQ. CTLR GOT 2 ACFT MIXED UP AND SWITCHED RWY ASSIGNMENTS SEVERAL TIMES.
Narrative: LOCATION: DFW. XXXY WAS CLRED FOR THE RWY 17R APCH. XXXX WAS ON THE SAME APCH FREQ AS WELL. WE HEARD APCH TELL XXXX TO PLAN RWY 18R. XXXX WAS CLRED TO RWY 18R. A FEW MINS LATER RWY 17R. WHEN QUESTIONED BY XXXX THE APCH WAS CHANGED RWY 18R. WHILE XXXY WAS ESTABLISHED ON RWY 17R ILS AS CLRED, APCH QUESTIONED IF WE WERE INTERCEPTING THE RWY 18R ILS. WE STATED NO, WE WERE CLRED FOR THE RWY 17R ILS. APCH THEN CLRED US FOR THE RWY 18R ILS. WE ASKED FOR THE RWY 18R ILS FREQ AND PROCEEDED TO INTERCEPT. AT 7 DME DID NOT SEEM TO BE IN A POS FOR SAFE LNDG AND BROKE OFF APCH. DUE TO FREQ CONGESTION IT TOOK SOME TIME TO RELAY THIS TO CTLR. DURING OUR GAR AND SUBSEQUENT APCH, CTL APPEARED TO STILL CONFUSE OUR FLT XXXX WITH FLT XXXY. SUGGEST THAT FLT NUMBERS NOT BE SIMILAR FOR FLTS THAT COULD DEPART AND ARRIVE AT SIMILAR TIMES.
