Narrative:
During descent from FL200 on the karlo 6 to phx and still with ZAB, we were cleared to 11000 ft. The clearance of 11000 ft was read back by the copilot and no other xmissions were received until the center asked, 'what's your altitude?' the response of 11000 ft was given and the controller instructed us to climb to 12000 ft. The controller indicated the clearance had been to 12000 ft and we advised him that we understood and read back 11000 ft.
