Narrative:
Vectored close, high, and fast for approach to runway 4R at ewr. Inside marker, instructed to sidestep to runway 4L. Not in a comfortable position to land, so executed missed approach. On gear retraction, experienced a left hydraulic system failure resulting in main gear up with nose gear still down. During distraction, climbed to 3000 ft vice 2000 ft as published. Told tower of altitude and was instructed to maintain the 3000 ft. We then requested a vector to work on the hydraulic problem. Landed uneventfully with 20 degrees flaps, used full length runway 4R, then taxied clear onto runway 11/29 and was towed to gate due to loss of nosewheel steering. Supplemental information from acn 365025: initial missed approach instructions from tower were to fly runway heading to 2000 ft. Then a few seconds later, tower instructed us to fly the published missed approach, which directs a climb to 3000 ft, which we did. We may have climbed beyond 2000 ft before receiving instruction to do so while we idented the hydraulic problem.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR PIC OVERSHOOTS HIS ALT ON A GAR AT EWR BECAUSE OF CREW DISTR WITH A FAILED HYD SYS THAT FAILED ON HIS LGT DURING THE GAR. TWR CTLR HAD ASKED FOR FLT TO CHANGE FROM RWY 4R TO RWY 4L WHICH WAS NOT POSSIBLE FROM INSIDE THE LOM.
Narrative: VECTORED CLOSE, HIGH, AND FAST FOR APCH TO RWY 4R AT EWR. INSIDE MARKER, INSTRUCTED TO SIDESTEP TO RWY 4L. NOT IN A COMFORTABLE POS TO LAND, SO EXECUTED MISSED APCH. ON GEAR RETRACTION, EXPERIENCED A L HYD SYS FAILURE RESULTING IN MAIN GEAR UP WITH NOSE GEAR STILL DOWN. DURING DISTR, CLBED TO 3000 FT VICE 2000 FT AS PUBLISHED. TOLD TWR OF ALT AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO MAINTAIN THE 3000 FT. WE THEN REQUESTED A VECTOR TO WORK ON THE HYD PROB. LANDED UNEVENTFULLY WITH 20 DEGS FLAPS, USED FULL LENGTH RWY 4R, THEN TAXIED CLR ONTO RWY 11/29 AND WAS TOWED TO GATE DUE TO LOSS OF NOSEWHEEL STEERING. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 365025: INITIAL MISSED APCH INSTRUCTIONS FROM TWR WERE TO FLY RWY HDG TO 2000 FT. THEN A FEW SECONDS LATER, TWR INSTRUCTED US TO FLY THE PUBLISHED MISSED APCH, WHICH DIRECTS A CLB TO 3000 FT, WHICH WE DID. WE MAY HAVE CLBED BEYOND 2000 FT BEFORE RECEIVING INSTRUCTION TO DO SO WHILE WE IDENTED THE HYD PROB.
