Flight crew of a B727 failed to follow their clearance on departure due to turning to the SID procedure prior to ATC clearance. They were following the SID and did not realize that their actual clearance was to maintain runway heading.

Narrative:
SID deviation lester 1 yyz. Frequency/altitude, yyz departure 3000 ft approximately. ATC facility: yyz departure. Location: lester 1 departure runway 24R yyz. We misunderstood yyz departure controller. Instead of staying on the SID we intercepted the 288 degree radial yyz on course. The controller caught it very quickly and said everything was ok, no problem. Now captain made phone call everything ok.

INSTEAD OF STAYING ON THE SID WE INTERCEPTED THE 288 DEG RADIAL YYZ ON COURSE. THE CTLR CAUGHT IT VERY QUICKLY AND SAID EVERYTHING WAS OK, NO PROB. NOW CAPT MADE PHONE CALL EVERYTHING OK.
