Narrative:
We were on a routine flight from 9k4 airport to ixd airport. Kansas city approach handed us off to ixd tower, and tower told us to call our left base. At this time, my friend and fellow CFI was flying and working the radios. We were both preoccupied looking for traffic entering on a right base for the same runway. We entered left base and landed uneventfully. After landing, we both realized that we had just landed without clearance. We spoke with the tower and apologized. The WX was clear and the flight was so uneventful that we became focused on looking for the other traffic and we completely forgot to call our base (and subsequently never received landing clearance). Another contributing factor was the fact that we had flown into this airport many times before, and this was another 'routine' flight for us.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: KATANA DA20 WAS TOLD TO CALL BASE BUT NEVER DID. THE RESULT WAS LNDG WITHOUT ATC CLRNC.
Narrative: WE WERE ON A ROUTINE FLT FROM 9K4 ARPT TO IXD ARPT. KANSAS CITY APCH HANDED US OFF TO IXD TWR, AND TWR TOLD US TO CALL OUR L BASE. AT THIS TIME, MY FRIEND AND FELLOW CFI WAS FLYING AND WORKING THE RADIOS. WE WERE BOTH PREOCCUPIED LOOKING FOR TFC ENTERING ON A R BASE FOR THE SAME RWY. WE ENTERED L BASE AND LANDED UNEVENTFULLY. AFTER LNDG, WE BOTH REALIZED THAT WE HAD JUST LANDED WITHOUT CLRNC. WE SPOKE WITH THE TWR AND APOLOGIZED. THE WX WAS CLR AND THE FLT WAS SO UNEVENTFUL THAT WE BECAME FOCUSED ON LOOKING FOR THE OTHER TFC AND WE COMPLETELY FORGOT TO CALL OUR BASE (AND SUBSEQUENTLY NEVER RECEIVED LNDG CLRNC). ANOTHER CONTRIBUTING FACTOR WAS THE FACT THAT WE HAD FLOWN INTO THIS ARPT MANY TIMES BEFORE, AND THIS WAS ANOTHER 'ROUTINE' FLT FOR US.
