Narrative:

Flight left aus for dfw. We took off on runway 13R at aus. Our predep clearance was via the aus 330 degrees/35 DME fix. Departure control, after takeoff, gave us a right turn to 350 degrees to intercept the aus 030 degrees radial (we thought) and told us to contact ZHU. The 350 degree heading seemed insufficient to intercept the 030 degree radial, so I turned further right to 045 degree heading. We informed houston of the radial and heading. ZHU questioned the clearance. I checked the predep clearance and discovered the error. We asked ZHU if they wanted us to turn back to the left, and houston replied with 'standby.' rather than continue further away from the correct radial (330 degree radial), I turned left to intercept the 330 degree radial. The ZHU controller was unable to offer any suggestions (or clrncs) and eventually handed us off to another sector. That controller cleared us to glen rose VOR (jen). The mistake (by me) was simply confusion over the 330 degree radial versus 030 degree radial. We were not aware of any traffic conflicts. Supplemental information from acn 365253: I read back 030 degree radial, I got no response from aus.

Title: MD88 CREW TURNS FROM ASSIGNED 350 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT THE WRONG RADIAL DURING DEP FROM AUS, TX. FO READ BACK A 350 DEG HDG FOR THE '030' DEG RADIAL WHEN THE PDC INDICATED A '330' DEG RADIAL. PIC TURNS TO 045 DEGS FOR INTERCEPT OF 030 DEG RADIAL.

Narrative: FLT LEFT AUS FOR DFW. WE TOOK OFF ON RWY 13R AT AUS. OUR PREDEP CLRNC WAS VIA THE AUS 330 DEGS/35 DME FIX. DEP CTL, AFTER TKOF, GAVE US A R TURN TO 350 DEGS TO INTERCEPT THE AUS 030 DEGS RADIAL (WE THOUGHT) AND TOLD US TO CONTACT ZHU. THE 350 DEG HDG SEEMED INSUFFICIENT TO INTERCEPT THE 030 DEG RADIAL, SO I TURNED FURTHER R TO 045 DEG HDG. WE INFORMED HOUSTON OF THE RADIAL AND HEADING. ZHU QUESTIONED THE CLRNC. I CHKED THE PREDEP CLRNC AND DISCOVERED THE ERROR. WE ASKED ZHU IF THEY WANTED US TO TURN BACK TO THE L, AND HOUSTON REPLIED WITH 'STANDBY.' RATHER THAN CONTINUE FURTHER AWAY FROM THE CORRECT RADIAL (330 DEG RADIAL), I TURNED L TO INTERCEPT THE 330 DEG RADIAL. THE ZHU CTLR WAS UNABLE TO OFFER ANY SUGGESTIONS (OR CLRNCS) AND EVENTUALLY HANDED US OFF TO ANOTHER SECTOR. THAT CTLR CLRED US TO GLEN ROSE VOR (JEN). THE MISTAKE (BY ME) WAS SIMPLY CONFUSION OVER THE 330 DEG RADIAL VERSUS 030 DEG RADIAL. WE WERE NOT AWARE OF ANY TFC CONFLICTS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 365253: I READ BACK 030 DEG RADIAL, I GOT NO RESPONSE FROM AUS.
