Narrative:
On base leg to runway 9L at lhr. Lhr controller gave us left turn to 090 degrees to intercept the localizer. I observed the captain select 090 degrees and pull heading select knob and arm the approach mode. The aircraft immediately turn to the right instead of to the left. Captain re-engaged the heading mode and turned back to the left. But the autoplt turn to the right had made us overshoot the localizer. We were correcting back when the lhr controller called and commanded a left turn to 080 degrees and he commented we had appeared to turn to the right. Engaged approach mode and made uneventful landing. It would have been better if we had an ATC telephone number to call so that we could have debriefed the controller or a number to call locally to leave information instead of waiting until today to debrief.

Title: CTLR ASSIGNED A L TURN TO INTERCEPT THE LOC JUST BEFORE LOC INTERCEPT. THE PF HDG SELECTED THE ASSIGNED L TURN AND ALSO APCH MODE. THE ACFT TURNED TO THE R INSTEAD OF THE L. THE PF DISCONNECTED THE APCH MODE AND SELECTED THE L TURN. THE LOC OVERSHOOT PROMPTED THE CTLR TO COMMENT ABOUT THE R TURN AND REASSIGN AN INTERCEPT HDG.
