Narrative:
On an EMS flight, I was in an aircraft on loan to us as a backup. I spent longer than usual programming an unfamiliar LORAN. The approach frequency was not published on the chart nor was it on ATIS (and not posted on our instrument panel as usual). I then contacted ZZZ tower (outside class B) to get approach's frequency, contacted approach and was given a squawk code (about the class B border). I then was asked to squawk VFR and switch to tower. By the time I contacted tower again I was within class D without proper clearance. I understand I was in violation and if I had it to do over again, I would program the LORAN on the ground before lift- off, or at least give myself more time to contact ATC. With the combination of a semi-unfamiliar aircraft, unfamiliar supplemental navigation equipment, being in 'mission' mode, I neglected to realize how quick I came upon the airport before having proper clearance to enter.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: EMS FLT FLIES INTO CLASS D OF DTW PRIOR TO GETTING AUTH FROM TWR. HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN ON TWR FREQ TO OBTAIN APCH CTL FREQ AND WAS LATE SWITCHING BACK TO TWR FOR CLRNC. PLT COMPLAINT OF LOANED ACFT WITH LESS THAN DESIRED RADIO FREQ INFO AND NAV EQUIP ON BOARD.
Narrative: ON AN EMS FLT, I WAS IN AN ACFT ON LOAN TO US AS A BACKUP. I SPENT LONGER THAN USUAL PROGRAMMING AN UNFAMILIAR LORAN. THE APCH FREQ WAS NOT PUBLISHED ON THE CHART NOR WAS IT ON ATIS (AND NOT POSTED ON OUR INST PANEL AS USUAL). I THEN CONTACTED ZZZ TWR (OUTSIDE CLASS B) TO GET APCH'S FREQ, CONTACTED APCH AND WAS GIVEN A SQUAWK CODE (ABOUT THE CLASS B BORDER). I THEN WAS ASKED TO SQUAWK VFR AND SWITCH TO TWR. BY THE TIME I CONTACTED TWR AGAIN I WAS WITHIN CLASS D WITHOUT PROPER CLRNC. I UNDERSTAND I WAS IN VIOLATION AND IF I HAD IT TO DO OVER AGAIN, I WOULD PROGRAM THE LORAN ON THE GND BEFORE LIFT- OFF, OR AT LEAST GIVE MYSELF MORE TIME TO CONTACT ATC. WITH THE COMBINATION OF A SEMI-UNFAMILIAR ACFT, UNFAMILIAR SUPPLEMENTAL NAV EQUIP, BEING IN 'MISSION' MODE, I NEGLECTED TO REALIZE HOW QUICK I CAME UPON THE ARPT BEFORE HAVING PROPER CLRNC TO ENTER.
