Medium large transport aircraft on vectors for approach had miscom with approach controller. Flight crew thought they were cleared to 3500 ft and approach questioned their altitude and then had them climb immediately to 4000 ft.

Narrative:
Accepted clearance to 3500 ft. Descended to 3500 ft. Approach inquired as to what altitude we were, then gave us clearance to climb to 4000 ft. We complied and landed without incidence. Supplemental information from acn 365459: situation never clarified. I believe we may have inadvertently flown a heading or altitude assigned to another aircraft on frequency.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 365459: SIT NEVER CLARIFIED. I BELIEVE WE MAY HAVE INADVERTENTLY FLOWN A HDG OR ALT ASSIGNED TO ANOTHER ACFT ON FREQ.
