Narrative:

We were cleared for lda DME runway 26L to hnl airport. The airport was VFR, visibility 10 SM. Last assigned altitude was 3000 ft. We started our descent on approach prior to secil because we referenced HSI DME instead of lda DME. We realized we had made a mistake when approach control asked, what was our altitude. We had descended to 1000 ft and had the airport visually and climbed back to 2000 ft. Approach control then cleared us for a visual approach to runway 26L, and to contact tower. There was no conflict with any other traffic.

Title: L1011-250 ON LDA DME RWY 26L AT 3000 FT. MISREAD DME AND BEGAN DSCNT PRIOR TO XING SECIL, WAS AT 1000 FT. CLBED BACK TO 2000 FT WHEN CTLR QUERIED ALT.

Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR LDA DME RWY 26L TO HNL ARPT. THE ARPT WAS VFR, VISIBILITY 10 SM. LAST ASSIGNED ALT WAS 3000 FT. WE STARTED OUR DSCNT ON APCH PRIOR TO SECIL BECAUSE WE REFED HSI DME INSTEAD OF LDA DME. WE REALIZED WE HAD MADE A MISTAKE WHEN APCH CTL ASKED, WHAT WAS OUR ALT. WE HAD DSNDED TO 1000 FT AND HAD THE ARPT VISUALLY AND CLBED BACK TO 2000 FT. APCH CTL THEN CLRED US FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 26L, AND TO CONTACT TWR. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT WITH ANY OTHER TFC.
