Narrative:
We were cleared to intercept the 254 degree radial inbound to mkk VOR and given lower to 2500 ft. At the time I was flying and operating the #1 radio, the captain was on radio #2 to establish communication with mkk tower so we could cancel due to a slower IFR (C172 practice approach) traffic on the approach ahead of us. ATC then gave us a holding clearance (hold northeast as published 056 degree radial) and told us we should be at 3500 ft. We said we were given 2500 ft, but now are correcting to 3500 ft. The captain then requested to cancel IFR and it was granted. The altitude of 2500 ft was read back to the controller by myself and then was entered on the afcs. I believe it was a communication only, 2500 ft versus 3500 ft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ATR42 ON THE 254 RADIAL MKK ACKNOWLEDGED DSCNT TO 2500 FT. CAPT ON #2 COM TALKING WITH TWR FOR WIND CONDITIONS. C172 ON PRACTICE VOR APCH. CLRED TO HOLD NE AS PUBLISHED AND MAINTAIN 3500 FT. ADVISED CLRED TO 2500 FT BUT WOULD CLB TO 3500 FT. CAPT CANCELED IFR.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED TO INTERCEPT THE 254 DEG RADIAL INBOUND TO MKK VOR AND GIVEN LOWER TO 2500 FT. AT THE TIME I WAS FLYING AND OPERATING THE #1 RADIO, THE CAPT WAS ON RADIO #2 TO ESTABLISH COM WITH MKK TWR SO WE COULD CANCEL DUE TO A SLOWER IFR (C172 PRACTICE APCH) TFC ON THE APCH AHEAD OF US. ATC THEN GAVE US A HOLDING CLRNC (HOLD NE AS PUBLISHED 056 DEG RADIAL) AND TOLD US WE SHOULD BE AT 3500 FT. WE SAID WE WERE GIVEN 2500 FT, BUT NOW ARE CORRECTING TO 3500 FT. THE CAPT THEN REQUESTED TO CANCEL IFR AND IT WAS GRANTED. THE ALT OF 2500 FT WAS READ BACK TO THE CTLR BY MYSELF AND THEN WAS ENTERED ON THE AFCS. I BELIEVE IT WAS A COM ONLY, 2500 FT VERSUS 3500 FT.
