Narrative:
I received a turnover for this aircraft which had a valve replaced for the left main landing gear. The verbal report I got was that the left landing gear control valve was replaced per maintenance manual. The actual valve that was replaced was the sequence valve per maintenance manual. Since I understood the control valve was replaced I performed the return to service test which required the landing gear to be pinned and the landing gear handle cycled. The proper procedure for the valve that was actually replaced would have required the aircraft to be jacked and performed the landing gear retraction test (reference xx-aa-B) and manual extension test (reference xx-yy-B) required by airworthiness directive. The aircraft was stopped in xyz so that the correct retraction and manual extension tests could be performed. The problem was discovered by maintenance control center. This problem occurred because of a verbal turnover in which the valve was called by the wrong name.

Title: A B727-200 WAS RETURNED TO SVC AFTER THE L LNDG GEAR SEQUENCE VALVE WAS REPLACED WITHOUT THE CORRECT OPERATIONAL CHKS BEING PERFORMED.
Narrative: I RECEIVED A TURNOVER FOR THIS ACFT WHICH HAD A VALVE REPLACED FOR THE L MAIN LNDG GEAR. THE VERBAL RPT I GOT WAS THAT THE L LNDG GEAR CTL VALVE WAS REPLACED PER MAINT MANUAL. THE ACTUAL VALVE THAT WAS REPLACED WAS THE SEQUENCE VALVE PER MAINT MANUAL. SINCE I UNDERSTOOD THE CTL VALVE WAS REPLACED I PERFORMED THE RETURN TO SVC TEST WHICH REQUIRED THE LNDG GEAR TO BE PINNED AND THE LNDG GEAR HANDLE CYCLED. THE PROPER PROC FOR THE VALVE THAT WAS ACTUALLY REPLACED WOULD HAVE REQUIRED THE ACFT TO BE JACKED AND PERFORMED THE LNDG GEAR RETRACTION TEST (REF XX-AA-B) AND MANUAL EXTENSION TEST (REF XX-YY-B) REQUIRED BY AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE. THE ACFT WAS STOPPED IN XYZ SO THAT THE CORRECT RETRACTION AND MANUAL EXTENSION TESTS COULD BE PERFORMED. THE PROB WAS DISCOVERED BY MAINT CTL CTR. THIS PROB OCCURRED BECAUSE OF A VERBAL TURNOVER IN WHICH THE VALVE WAS CALLED BY THE WRONG NAME.
