Narrative:

After completing the landing on runway 22L during a touch-and- go maneuver we observed a metroliner type airplane coming directly toward us on the centerline on runway 4R. On final approach I verified gear down and runway clear. Immediately after touchdown I observed a mirage illusion formed at the departure end of the runway. At the departure end of runway 22L there appeared a golden colored light reflection. I thought the reflection was in an unusual location and continued to watch it. As the student prepared to apply takeoff power, the metroliner became visible as it moved through the mirage. I called for a rejected takeoff, applied reverse power and maneuvered the kingair to the right side of runway 22L. The metroliner apparently observed us approximately simultaneously and moved to the opposite side of the runway. As we were slowing down, I made a general radio broadcast that there was an airplane operating on the runway against the landing traffic. The airplane trailing us executed a go around. We came to a momentary stop on the runway shoulder prior to taxiway D, as did the metroliner on the opposite side of the runway. I hesitated on the shoulder to determine the metroliner's intentions. No communications had been established with the metroliner at this time. Immediately upon moving onto taxiway D, I finally made contact with the metroliner pilot. He claimed to have had radio failure, being unable to transmit or receive. He explained he had just landed on runway 4R and had not seen or heard anyone at the airport. He apologized repeatedly. We taxied back to runway 22L and completed the flight. I am still surprised we discovered the metroliner so late. Our mistake and problem is fundamental - - we simply did not see the other airplane even though we believe we did everything right. Contributing factors: loud and distracting intracockpit communications, reading the checklists. This is especially a problem when trying to listen to other aircraft broadcasts. Extremely long distances between opposite end of the runway/airport. The large traffic pattern we fly in the kingair adds to this problem. The mirage created by runway heating. Apparently nonstandard aim procedures by the metroliner.

Title: BE90 TKOF ABORTED WHEN A METROLINER WAS SIGHTED TAKING OFF IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. METROLINER WAS NOT ON CTAF FREQ. METROLINER ABORTED ALSO.

Narrative: AFTER COMPLETING THE LNDG ON RWY 22L DURING A TOUCH-AND- GO MANEUVER WE OBSERVED A METROLINER TYPE AIRPLANE COMING DIRECTLY TOWARD US ON THE CTRLINE ON RWY 4R. ON FINAL APCH I VERIFIED GEAR DOWN AND RWY CLR. IMMEDIATELY AFTER TOUCHDOWN I OBSERVED A MIRAGE ILLUSION FORMED AT THE DEP END OF THE RWY. AT THE DEP END OF RWY 22L THERE APPEARED A GOLDEN COLORED LIGHT REFLECTION. I THOUGHT THE REFLECTION WAS IN AN UNUSUAL LOCATION AND CONTINUED TO WATCH IT. AS THE STUDENT PREPARED TO APPLY TKOF PWR, THE METROLINER BECAME VISIBLE AS IT MOVED THROUGH THE MIRAGE. I CALLED FOR A REJECTED TKOF, APPLIED REVERSE PWR AND MANEUVERED THE KINGAIR TO THE R SIDE OF RWY 22L. THE METROLINER APPARENTLY OBSERVED US APPROX SIMULTANEOUSLY AND MOVED TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE RWY. AS WE WERE SLOWING DOWN, I MADE A GENERAL RADIO BROADCAST THAT THERE WAS AN AIRPLANE OPERATING ON THE RWY AGAINST THE LNDG TFC. THE AIRPLANE TRAILING US EXECUTED A GAR. WE CAME TO A MOMENTARY STOP ON THE RWY SHOULDER PRIOR TO TXWY D, AS DID THE METROLINER ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE RWY. I HESITATED ON THE SHOULDER TO DETERMINE THE METROLINER'S INTENTIONS. NO COMS HAD BEEN ESTABLISHED WITH THE METROLINER AT THIS TIME. IMMEDIATELY UPON MOVING ONTO TXWY D, I FINALLY MADE CONTACT WITH THE METROLINER PLT. HE CLAIMED TO HAVE HAD RADIO FAILURE, BEING UNABLE TO XMIT OR RECEIVE. HE EXPLAINED HE HAD JUST LANDED ON RWY 4R AND HAD NOT SEEN OR HEARD ANYONE AT THE ARPT. HE APOLOGIZED REPEATEDLY. WE TAXIED BACK TO RWY 22L AND COMPLETED THE FLT. I AM STILL SURPRISED WE DISCOVERED THE METROLINER SO LATE. OUR MISTAKE AND PROB IS FUNDAMENTAL - - WE SIMPLY DID NOT SEE THE OTHER AIRPLANE EVEN THOUGH WE BELIEVE WE DID EVERYTHING RIGHT. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: LOUD AND DISTRACTING INTRACOCKPIT COMS, READING THE CHKLISTS. THIS IS ESPECIALLY A PROB WHEN TRYING TO LISTEN TO OTHER ACFT BROADCASTS. EXTREMELY LONG DISTANCES BTWN OPPOSITE END OF THE RWY/ARPT. THE LARGE TFC PATTERN WE FLY IN THE KINGAIR ADDS TO THIS PROB. THE MIRAGE CREATED BY RWY HEATING. APPARENTLY NONSTANDARD AIM PROCS BY THE METROLINER.
