Narrative:

Arriving lga we were approximately 12-14 DME north of airport. Approach control cleared us for the visual approach to runway 22. We acknowledged clearance and began descending for landing. At approximately 2600 ft, approach stated 'low altitude alert, check your altitude.' we acknowledged the altitude, then approach control stated we should maintain 3000 ft until 10 DME from field. We did not understand this in our clearance only that we were cleared for the visual approach. We immediately climbed to 3000 ft until 10 DME then a normal descent and landing was made. Nothing further was said.
