Narrative:
Returning to myf from ramona. Map display showed us to be clear of class B airspace. Called socal approach for an ILS runway 28R to myf. Controller stated that we were already in class B airspace, then advised that next time we should call further out. He issued us a clearance, we completed the approach and landed. Suspect map display database was out of date. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states the cirrus SR20 is a new aircraft receiving certification this yr. It has a big screen display with 4 colors and the newest technology available. Reporter feels this will help improve the navigation capabilities for GA pilots and result in a decrease in the accident rate. He is an experienced cpr pilot and recently returned to GA flying. He finds a disturbing trend in GA pilots who constantly avoid training or upgrade flying with an instructor. His hope is that these pilots will be assisted by the new equipment. Reporter GPS had software from feb 1997, and is updated about every 90 days.

Title: CIRRUS SR20 PLT ENTERS CLASS B PRIOR TO OBTAINING CLRNC. GPS DATABASE OUT OF DATE.
Narrative: RETURNING TO MYF FROM RAMONA. MAP DISPLAY SHOWED US TO BE CLR OF CLASS B AIRSPACE. CALLED SOCAL APCH FOR AN ILS RWY 28R TO MYF. CTLR STATED THAT WE WERE ALREADY IN CLASS B AIRSPACE, THEN ADVISED THAT NEXT TIME WE SHOULD CALL FURTHER OUT. HE ISSUED US A CLRNC, WE COMPLETED THE APCH AND LANDED. SUSPECT MAP DISPLAY DATABASE WAS OUT OF DATE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES THE CIRRUS SR20 IS A NEW ACFT RECEIVING CERTIFICATION THIS YR. IT HAS A BIG SCREEN DISPLAY WITH 4 COLORS AND THE NEWEST TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE. RPTR FEELS THIS WILL HELP IMPROVE THE NAV CAPABILITIES FOR GA PLTS AND RESULT IN A DECREASE IN THE ACCIDENT RATE. HE IS AN EXPERIENCED CPR PLT AND RECENTLY RETURNED TO GA FLYING. HE FINDS A DISTURBING TREND IN GA PLTS WHO CONSTANTLY AVOID TRAINING OR UPGRADE FLYING WITH AN INSTRUCTOR. HIS HOPE IS THAT THESE PLTS WILL BE ASSISTED BY THE NEW EQUIP. RPTR GPS HAD SOFTWARE FROM FEB 1997, AND IS UPDATED ABOUT EVERY 90 DAYS.
