Narrative:
Level at 12000 ft, en route from mdw to mci. Captain was flying, he had the autoplt off while attempting to trim the aircraft. Center cleared us to 13000 ft and advised traffic at 14000 ft. I acknowledged, set 13000 ft in altitude alerter, and was looking outside for the traffic. When I looked back inside, we were climbing through 12500 ft at approximately 4000 FPM. I yelled 'altitude!' and began pushing forward on the yoke. Captain then realized his error, and immediately continued my corrective action. We went up to approximately 13300 ft before the captain got us back down to 13000 ft. TCASII did depict the traffic, but we did not get close enough for a TA or RA. Captain later stated he thought we were cleared to FL230, rather than 13000 ft. If the autoplt had been engaged, it would have leveled us automatically. Supplemental information from acn 368805: I started the climb, then started looking at the FMC for data and inadvertently overshot my altitude.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-300 LEVEL 12000 FT CLRED CLB 13000 FT TFC AT 14000 FT. FO NOTED HIGH RATE CLB AT 12500 FT AND CALLED TO CAPT'S ATTN WHO WAS HAND-FLYING. OVERSHOT ALT 300 FT. TFC ON TCASII BUT NO TA OR RA.
Narrative: LEVEL AT 12000 FT, ENRTE FROM MDW TO MCI. CAPT WAS FLYING, HE HAD THE AUTOPLT OFF WHILE ATTEMPTING TO TRIM THE ACFT. CTR CLRED US TO 13000 FT AND ADVISED TFC AT 14000 FT. I ACKNOWLEDGED, SET 13000 FT IN ALT ALERTER, AND WAS LOOKING OUTSIDE FOR THE TFC. WHEN I LOOKED BACK INSIDE, WE WERE CLBING THROUGH 12500 FT AT APPROX 4000 FPM. I YELLED 'ALT!' AND BEGAN PUSHING FORWARD ON THE YOKE. CAPT THEN REALIZED HIS ERROR, AND IMMEDIATELY CONTINUED MY CORRECTIVE ACTION. WE WENT UP TO APPROX 13300 FT BEFORE THE CAPT GOT US BACK DOWN TO 13000 FT. TCASII DID DEPICT THE TFC, BUT WE DID NOT GET CLOSE ENOUGH FOR A TA OR RA. CAPT LATER STATED HE THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED TO FL230, RATHER THAN 13000 FT. IF THE AUTOPLT HAD BEEN ENGAGED, IT WOULD HAVE LEVELED US AUTOMATICALLY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 368805: I STARTED THE CLB, THEN STARTED LOOKING AT THE FMC FOR DATA AND INADVERTENTLY OVERSHOT MY ALT.
