Narrative:
We departed rockford on runway 18, assigned a heading of 190 degree after takeoff until direct to springfield, il. The WX was perfect VFR, high clouds, 49 degree F, no turbulence, visibility at altitude at over 60 mi. Departure and climb were normal and we were reclred to climb from our intermediate level off altitude of 8000' MSL up to 12000' MSL, our filed and final altitude. I was hand flying the airplane and clearly remember going through 10000' and 11000' MSL. I did not make a '1000' to go' call out and the copilot was occupied with the flight manifest and failed to make the call also. I was steering the airplane by visibility reference to the il, river at peoria which is on a direct line from rockford to springfield. I smoothly and carefully leveled off at what I perceived as 12000' MSL when center called us and told us our assigned altitude was 12000'. I looked and to my horror and dismay discovered I had leveled off at 13000' MSL. I immediately descended to 12000' and continued the flight west/O further incident. Normally I climb with the autoplt at higher altitudes because of the level off function it provides. The autoplt today was 'flying with write-up' in that the level off function overshoots and overcorrects and is uncomfortable during level off. We are required to make '1000' to go' on all climbs and dscnts. We didn't do it on this climb and we paid for it. I'll concentrate harder on required altitude callouts in the future.

Title: SMT PLT, CLIMBING TO CLEARED ALT AND HANDFLYING THE ACFT, BECOMES INATTENTIVE TO ALT AND OVERSHOOTS.
Narrative: WE DEPARTED ROCKFORD ON RWY 18, ASSIGNED A HDG OF 190 DEG AFTER TKOF UNTIL DIRECT TO SPRINGFIELD, IL. THE WX WAS PERFECT VFR, HIGH CLOUDS, 49 DEG F, NO TURB, VISIBILITY AT ALT AT OVER 60 MI. DEP AND CLB WERE NORMAL AND WE WERE RECLRED TO CLB FROM OUR INTERMEDIATE LEVEL OFF ALT OF 8000' MSL UP TO 12000' MSL, OUR FILED AND FINAL ALT. I WAS HAND FLYING THE AIRPLANE AND CLRLY REMEMBER GOING THROUGH 10000' AND 11000' MSL. I DID NOT MAKE A '1000' TO GO' CALL OUT AND THE COPLT WAS OCCUPIED WITH THE FLT MANIFEST AND FAILED TO MAKE THE CALL ALSO. I WAS STEERING THE AIRPLANE BY VIS REFERENCE TO THE IL, RIVER AT PEORIA WHICH IS ON A DIRECT LINE FROM ROCKFORD TO SPRINGFIELD. I SMOOTHLY AND CAREFULLY LEVELED OFF AT WHAT I PERCEIVED AS 12000' MSL WHEN CTR CALLED US AND TOLD US OUR ASSIGNED ALT WAS 12000'. I LOOKED AND TO MY HORROR AND DISMAY DISCOVERED I HAD LEVELED OFF AT 13000' MSL. I IMMEDIATELY DSNDED TO 12000' AND CONTINUED THE FLT W/O FURTHER INCIDENT. NORMALLY I CLB WITH THE AUTOPLT AT HIGHER ALTS BECAUSE OF THE LEVEL OFF FUNCTION IT PROVIDES. THE AUTOPLT TODAY WAS 'FLYING WITH WRITE-UP' IN THAT THE LEVEL OFF FUNCTION OVERSHOOTS AND OVERCORRECTS AND IS UNCOMFORTABLE DURING LEVEL OFF. WE ARE REQUIRED TO MAKE '1000' TO GO' ON ALL CLBS AND DSCNTS. WE DIDN'T DO IT ON THIS CLB AND WE PAID FOR IT. I'LL CONCENTRATE HARDER ON REQUIRED ALT CALLOUTS IN THE FUTURE.
