Narrative:
Atl TCA tops out at 12500 ft, one of the few that goes above 10000 ft. I am aware of this and try to be alert to any descent into the TCA space where my speed is above 250 KTS. I was on the rome 9 arrival to cross the last fix 'dalas' at 14000 ft speed had been assigned by center earlier at 280 KTS. At dalas I was handed over to atl approach. Atl approach had me descend to 12000 ft. I forgot going through 12500 ft that I was entering the atl TCA and did not slow down. After about 2 mins of being level at 12000 ft atl approach slowed me to 210 KTS. This is when I remembered I should have slowed earlier. Atl approach did not say there was a problem. I even had an FAA safety inspector on the jump seat. I don't think he noticed either. My first officer did not realize this problem until after the flight and we were discussing this. I have written in the TCA boundaries on my stars for atl. Perhaps chart maker could superimpose the appropriate section of the TCA chart in a light gray background to aid the forgetful.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FOKKER 100 EXCEEDED 250 KT SPD LIMIT WHEN THEY DSNDED BELOW 12500 FT AND ENTERED THE ATL TCA CLASS B.
Narrative: ATL TCA TOPS OUT AT 12500 FT, ONE OF THE FEW THAT GOES ABOVE 10000 FT. I AM AWARE OF THIS AND TRY TO BE ALERT TO ANY DSCNT INTO THE TCA SPACE WHERE MY SPD IS ABOVE 250 KTS. I WAS ON THE ROME 9 ARR TO CROSS THE LAST FIX 'DALAS' AT 14000 FT SPD HAD BEEN ASSIGNED BY CTR EARLIER AT 280 KTS. AT DALAS I WAS HANDED OVER TO ATL APCH. ATL APCH HAD ME DSND TO 12000 FT. I FORGOT GOING THROUGH 12500 FT THAT I WAS ENTERING THE ATL TCA AND DID NOT SLOW DOWN. AFTER ABOUT 2 MINS OF BEING LEVEL AT 12000 FT ATL APCH SLOWED ME TO 210 KTS. THIS IS WHEN I REMEMBERED I SHOULD HAVE SLOWED EARLIER. ATL APCH DID NOT SAY THERE WAS A PROB. I EVEN HAD AN FAA SAFETY INSPECTOR ON THE JUMP SEAT. I DON'T THINK HE NOTICED EITHER. MY FO DID NOT REALIZE THIS PROB UNTIL AFTER THE FLT AND WE WERE DISCUSSING THIS. I HAVE WRITTEN IN THE TCA BOUNDARIES ON MY STARS FOR ATL. PERHAPS CHART MAKER COULD SUPERIMPOSE THE APPROPRIATE SECTION OF THE TCA CHART IN A LIGHT GRAY BACKGROUND TO AID THE FORGETFUL.
