Narrative:
Approaching gate at jfk I was receiving visual guidance and instructions from the guideman. There are no parking aids like lights or stop bars at this gate. My approach to the gate was abnormally slow (less than 1 mph), jfk is always congested and I followed the guideman's directions precisely. When the stop command was issued I was able to stop immediately -- with no delay what-so-ever because of the ultra slow taxi speed. At the stop command, the parking brake was set with the aircraft aligned with the lead in line and nosewheel about 4 ft short of the B767 stop point painted on the ramp. The top of the left engine cowl had contacted the passenger jetway resulting in 2 dents on the cowl. There were no injuries or any other damage. A mechanic on the scene during the subsequent investigation told me the jetway had been improperly positioned prior to our arrival.
