Narrative:

After departing gallatin on an IFR training flight, I requested from ATC an altitude block for training purposes. Was given 3000-4000 ft. Inadvertently descended to 2600 ft during straight and level flight. ATC notified us of our altitude and we promptly climbed back to 3000 ft. As a flight instructor I was talking about a particular task and allowed the student to descend 400 ft below assigned altitude.
