Narrative:
On lda/DME runway 30L at stl broke out of clouds at 7.0 mi fix. Maneuvered aircraft towards runway, runway was in sight visual conditions. Traffic ahead and to right landing runway 30R was in sight. Tower queried us on our track, we were south of runway 30L centerline maneuvering. Tower asked if we had traffic in sight, we assured him we did. Landed without incident. When clearing runway, tower asked us to call them via land line. Contacted tower, they said there was no conflict or loss of separation. Yet they indicated correctly that we should have stayed on lda course to 4.4 DME then maneuver to the runway. There are notes on the plate to this effect. We reviewed these yet the sight of the runway allowed us to maneuver early for landing. I was captain of the flight, was giving IOE to transitioning captain on this airplane. The moral is to give every note on the approach plate due diligence.
