Narrative:

We pushed from gate at bna at XA07. Bna is an uncontrolled ramp with instructions to call ground at spot X for taxi. Halfway into the push I noticed a DC9, who had pushed from the gate to my left. His tug had just disconnected. After starting engine #1, we stopped and set brakes and cleared ground crew off headset, when I noticed the DC9 starting to taxi between us and the jet bridge for gate. Our push crews do not push us very far back from the gates at bna because it is about a 140 degree turn to get to the connector taxi line from the push point. I quickly stopped the push crew from backing their tug up. The right wing of the DC9 passed very close to the tug. I would estimate the wing was less than 15 ft from us, and almost over the tug. The left wing had to pass over ground equipment at the gate. I do not know how close that wing came to the bridge, but it had to be close. I am sure that our push crew could give more information. The air carrier crew obviously thought we had intentionally cut off their path to the active taxiway. We did end up blocking them, but it was completely unintentional. At any rate, that reaction was unsafe and very unprofessional.

AT ANY RATE, THAT REACTION WAS UNSAFE AND VERY UNPROFESSIONAL.
