Narrative:

On flight into pit airport on ILS approach runway 28L, we got GS capture and I started descent. We configured and did the landing checklist. I then felt that the descent and DME from airport did not look right and asked the other pilot to back me up on the ILS. At that time, the tower called and said we had an altitude alert. We climbed back to 3000 ft as soon as possible. We then got a valid GS signal -- proceeded on the approach and completed the landing. No further comment was made by the tower. I then called tower supervisor upon arrival at the gate and he said that the ILS was unmonitored during the approach (we had 2 1/2 - 3 mi visibility) and that there was no problem, as we had made the correction for the early descent on the false GS.

Title: AN ACR B737 FLC MAKING AN APCH CAPTURED A FALSE GS AND STARTED AN EARLY, STEEP, DSCNT. THE FLC RECOGNIZED THE PROB AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME THAT THE APCH CTLR CALLED ABOUT A LOW ALT ALERT. THEY RECOVERED AND RETURNED TO THEIR APCH ALT AND INTERCEPTED THE CORRECT GS FOR A SUCCESSFUL APCH AND LNDG. CFTT.

Narrative: ON FLT INTO PIT ARPT ON ILS APCH RWY 28L, WE GOT GS CAPTURE AND I STARTED DSCNT. WE CONFIGURED AND DID THE LNDG CHKLIST. I THEN FELT THAT THE DSCNT AND DME FROM ARPT DID NOT LOOK RIGHT AND ASKED THE OTHER PLT TO BACK ME UP ON THE ILS. AT THAT TIME, THE TWR CALLED AND SAID WE HAD AN ALT ALERT. WE CLBED BACK TO 3000 FT ASAP. WE THEN GOT A VALID GS SIGNAL -- PROCEEDED ON THE APCH AND COMPLETED THE LNDG. NO FURTHER COMMENT WAS MADE BY THE TWR. I THEN CALLED TWR SUPVR UPON ARR AT THE GATE AND HE SAID THAT THE ILS WAS UNMONITORED DURING THE APCH (WE HAD 2 1/2 - 3 MI VISIBILITY) AND THAT THERE WAS NO PROB, AS WE HAD MADE THE CORRECTION FOR THE EARLY DSCNT ON THE FALSE GS.
