Narrative:
Takeoff on dfw runway 13L, 3 KT tailwind, aircraft weight 28800 pounds, traffic landing on dfw runway 17L, final crosses runway 13L. Departure after air carrier F100 or MD80 crossed runway 13L and landed on runway 17L. We used 100% power for takeoff (instead of reduced power). After rotation at less than 100 ft AGL, the aircraft encountered the landing aircraft's wake turbulence. It was a solid encounter, the aircraft buffeted and decelerated. The stall warning system and stick shaker activated for approximately 2 seconds. I lowered the aircraft attitude from 10 degrees to 4 degrees and flew through the wake. After we cleared the wake turbulence, we retracted the landing gear and cleaned up the aircraft. Too close of a call! Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter participated in the wake turbulence callback study. The flight crew saw the F100 land on a crossing runway, so they used maximum power for takeoff. Reporter called the turbulence encounter most severe. Along with that, his aircraft lost altitude, but the airspeed remained steady and slowly started to build. Next time, the reporter stated he will take a departure delay rather than fly into such a strong wake.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A SAAB 340-B, TAKING OFF FROM DFW, ENCOUNTERS WAKE TURB SHORTLY AFTER LIFTOFF WHICH WAS CREATED BY A LNDG F100 FROM A XING RWY. THE SAAB 340B FLC IS SURPRISED AS THEIR ACFT LOSES ALT AND NOSE IS PITCHED DOWN IN ORDER TO BUILD SPD AND FLY THROUGH THE WAKE.
Narrative: TKOF ON DFW RWY 13L, 3 KT TAILWIND, ACFT WT 28800 LBS, TFC LNDG ON DFW RWY 17L, FINAL CROSSES RWY 13L. DEP AFTER ACR F100 OR MD80 CROSSED RWY 13L AND LANDED ON RWY 17L. WE USED 100% PWR FOR TKOF (INSTEAD OF REDUCED PWR). AFTER ROTATION AT LESS THAN 100 FT AGL, THE ACFT ENCOUNTERED THE LNDG ACFT'S WAKE TURB. IT WAS A SOLID ENCOUNTER, THE ACFT BUFFETED AND DECELERATED. THE STALL WARNING SYS AND STICK SHAKER ACTIVATED FOR APPROX 2 SECONDS. I LOWERED THE ACFT ATTITUDE FROM 10 DEGS TO 4 DEGS AND FLEW THROUGH THE WAKE. AFTER WE CLRED THE WAKE TURB, WE RETRACTED THE LNDG GEAR AND CLEANED UP THE ACFT. TOO CLOSE OF A CALL! CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR PARTICIPATED IN THE WAKE TURB CALLBACK STUDY. THE FLC SAW THE F100 LAND ON A XING RWY, SO THEY USED MAX PWR FOR TKOF. RPTR CALLED THE TURB ENCOUNTER MOST SEVERE. ALONG WITH THAT, HIS ACFT LOST ALT, BUT THE AIRSPD REMAINED STEADY AND SLOWLY STARTED TO BUILD. NEXT TIME, THE RPTR STATED HE WILL TAKE A DEP DELAY RATHER THAN FLY INTO SUCH A STRONG WAKE.
