Narrative:

Jun/xx/97, flight cvg-yul. When we checked in with ZID (123.92), they told us to go direct rod VOR. We read back instructions, programmed FMS, and flew direct. We were then told to switch to the next controller. Upon checking in, we were given a left turn and expedite climb to a new altitude. Within a min or 2, we were told to stop climb for traffic. The traffic then passed overhead at about 1000 ft. The controller never gave us an inkling that we were in violation.
