Flight crew of a DC9 believed that the tower had cleared them into position for takeoff when they really had not. The tower controller was speaking in french to some aircraft and in english to others. Therefore, they heard the clearance for someone else.

Narrative:
We were cleared to taxi to runway 28 at yul. We switched to tower controller. All communication (2 other aircraft in front of us) was in french. To my knowledge, using language other than english is not legal or recommended. We misunderstood a clearance and taxied into position and held on runway 28 at yul. We were then cleared for takeoff without further incident.

WE WERE THEN CLRED FOR TKOF WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
