Narrative:
We were cleared and filed to intercept the agc 221 degree radial to burgs. On departure from runway 28C I was given a heading of 180 degrees to intercept the agc 221 degrees. Unfortunately I had inadvertently selected the mmj VOR frequency 112.0 instead of the agc VOR frequency 110.0. Our FMC route was direct burgs (no agc fix) so the FMC showed on course as I intercepted the mmj 221 degrees instead of the agc 221 degrees. We were also given a clearance to climb to 14000 ft while on the 180 degree heading. As we intercepted mmj 221 degrees the pit departure controller questioned our heading and told us to level at 8000 ft. Passing 7800 ft we received a TA for traffic ahead at 9000 ft. We then realized our error and were returned to the 180 degree heading to intercept our filed route.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR B737 FLC INTERCEPTS AN OUTBOUND COURSE, BUT OFF OF THE WRONG VOR. THE ALERT DEP CTLR PREVENTS A CONFLICT BY HAVING THE FLC LEVEL OFF AT 8000 FT.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED AND FILED TO INTERCEPT THE AGC 221 DEG RADIAL TO BURGS. ON DEP FROM RWY 28C I WAS GIVEN A HDG OF 180 DEGS TO INTERCEPT THE AGC 221 DEGS. UNFORTUNATELY I HAD INADVERTENTLY SELECTED THE MMJ VOR FREQ 112.0 INSTEAD OF THE AGC VOR FREQ 110.0. OUR FMC RTE WAS DIRECT BURGS (NO AGC FIX) SO THE FMC SHOWED ON COURSE AS I INTERCEPTED THE MMJ 221 DEGS INSTEAD OF THE AGC 221 DEGS. WE WERE ALSO GIVEN A CLRNC TO CLB TO 14000 FT WHILE ON THE 180 DEG HDG. AS WE INTERCEPTED MMJ 221 DEGS THE PIT DEP CTLR QUESTIONED OUR HEADING AND TOLD US TO LEVEL AT 8000 FT. PASSING 7800 FT WE RECEIVED A TA FOR TFC AHEAD AT 9000 FT. WE THEN REALIZED OUR ERROR AND WERE RETURNED TO THE 180 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT OUR FILED RTE.
