Narrative:
I was asked to participate in a formation fly-by for a friend's funeral service. A fly-by of 5 aircraft in a v-formation performed a missing man fly-by at approximately 600 ft, then I led a 3-SHIP fly-by over the runway at approximately 100 ft. The formation flying portion was well briefed and all of the participants had formation experience. The highest experience level was with the 3 aircraft on the second pass. As I said, the flying part was well thought out, but not enough thought was put into the ground track and clearance from the people on the ground, so the formation ended up too close to the people. Before I participate in another fly- by, the formation members will have practiced, and we will know the regulation governing this type of operation.
