Narrative:
Departed ijx. Left main strut and wheel never left ground with me. Practiced maneuvers with student and was returning for landing. Manager at that time notified us he'd just found 1 main strut and wheel. I then prepared to make low approach for verification. Afterwards, I shut fuel flow and electrical power off (left main) and glided in on grass runway with left crosswind to help create more lift on wheel-less wing. Once landed, everything went smoothly enough that the only damage was to the left flap which was easily fixed. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the strut and wheel failure was caused by a sheared bolt which locks the strut assembly into the strut support socket. The reporter said a thorough search of the logbook failed to reveal any previous work on the landing gear or history of landing gear problems.

Title: A PA28-161 DECLARED AN EMER AND RETURNED TO THE FIELD DUE TO THE L MAIN LNDG GEAR STRUT AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY DEPARTED THE ACFT ON TKOF.
Narrative: DEPARTED IJX. L MAIN STRUT AND WHEEL NEVER LEFT GND WITH ME. PRACTICED MANEUVERS WITH STUDENT AND WAS RETURNING FOR LNDG. MANAGER AT THAT TIME NOTIFIED US HE'D JUST FOUND 1 MAIN STRUT AND WHEEL. I THEN PREPARED TO MAKE LOW APCH FOR VERIFICATION. ONCE LANDED, EVERYTHING WENT SMOOTHLY ENOUGH THAT THE ONLY DAMAGE WAS TO THE L FLAP WHICH WAS EASILY FIXED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE STRUT AND WHEEL FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY A SHEARED BOLT WHICH LOCKS THE STRUT ASSEMBLY INTO THE STRUT SUPPORT SOCKET. THE RPTR SAID A THOROUGH SEARCH OF THE LOGBOOK FAILED TO REVEAL ANY PREVIOUS WORK ON THE LNDG GEAR OR HISTORY OF LNDG GEAR PROBS.
