Narrative:
While en route from new haven, ct, to washington's dulles airport at 14000 ft on 135.75 and acting as a crew member on an air carrier flight, we passed through new york's airspace. I observed an air traffic controller questioning a couple of aircraft as to their call sign after readbacks. I heard an air carrier flight reprimanded about not using his call sign and another air carrier flight commented about the controller entertaining him. This seemed to anger the controller. ATC then made a general broadcast that he didn't have caller identify or mental telepathy to use call signs. When another aircraft changed frequencys they made the comment that 'it had been a real pleasure,' this was in addition to numerous other comments by other aircraft. On our handoff to another new york frequency 133.67 I was determined not to mix-up any of what the controller had told me. In my readback I forgot to use my call sign replying with only the new frequency and 'good day sir.' before I could correct my mistake the controller snapped back with 'I'm going to write you up, I'm going to write you up and turn it in to the gato.' I apologized and stated that I had made a mistake and that it was completely unintentional. The controller then replied, 'we'll see what the gato has to say about that.' this person could have just been having a bad day. However, this only diverted the attention of everyone involved from other duties we were assigned.

Title: AN ACR LTT FLC RUNS AFOUL OF A CTLR WHO LOSES HIS PATIENCE WITH FLCS WHO DID NOT USE THEIR CALL SIGNS DURING RADIO XMISSIONS.

ATC THEN MADE A GENERAL BROADCAST THAT HE DIDN'T HAVE CALLER IDENT OR MENTAL TELEPATHY TO USE CALL SIGNS. WHEN ANOTHER ACFT CHANGED FREQS THEY MADE THE COMMENT THAT 'IT HAD BEEN A REAL PLEASURE,' THIS WAS IN ADDITION TO NUMEROUS OTHER COMMENTS BY OTHER ACFT. ON OUR HDOF TO ANOTHER NEW YORK FREQ 133.67 I WAS DETERMINED NOT TO MIX-UP ANY OF WHAT THE CTLR HAD TOLD ME. IN MY READBACK I FORGOT TO USE MY CALL SIGN REPLYING WITH ONLY THE NEW FREQ AND 'GOOD DAY SIR.' BEFORE I COULD CORRECT MY MISTAKE THE CTLR SNAPPED BACK WITH 'I'M GOING TO WRITE YOU UP, I'M GOING TO WRITE YOU UP AND TURN IT IN TO THE GATO.' I APOLOGIZED AND STATED THAT I HAD MADE A MISTAKE AND THAT IT WAS COMPLETELY UNINTENTIONAL. THE CTLR THEN REPLIED, 'WE'LL SEE WHAT THE GATO HAS TO SAY ABOUT THAT.' THIS PERSON COULD HAVE JUST BEEN HAVING A BAD DAY. HOWEVER, THIS ONLY DIVERTED THE ATTN OF EVERYONE INVOLVED FROM OTHER DUTIES WE WERE ASSIGNED.
