Narrative:
Overweight landing was made at ord on jul/xx/97 at XA30Z using captain's authority/authorized. Landing was made on runway 27L at a weight of 138000 pounds using 28 degree flaps. Touchdown was smooth at 300 FPM and rollout was normal. Returned for landing at ord because of a left oil pressure low light and zero oil pressure at XA07Z. Abnormal 'engine 10' was followed and left engine was reduced to idle for remainder of flight, and APU was started. Left oil quantity was 16 qts, left N2 was 87 pct. Left oil temperature was 43 degrees and left egt was 400 degrees. Time of idle operation was 23 mins. Runway limited landing and climb limited weight was reviewed and found to be well below limits for temperature and runway 27L. Inside the runway 27L OM, at about 1500 ft AGL, the left generator tripped offline and was picked up by the APU. First officer advanced left throttle but engine did not spool up but there was still N2 rotation. After rollout first officer noticed left egt at 800 degrees and so left fire handle was pulled and left fuel lever put to off. Egt immediately started to decrease. Tower noted nothing unusual with the left engine and neither did a passing crew. Initially this started out as a precautionary landing. As a result, I did not declare an emergency or request the crash fire rescue equipment equipment. In hindsight though, I wished I had requested crash fire rescue equipment and upon review of part 1, I noted that an overweight landing is considered an emergency. It's obvious now that the engine should have been shut down. However, the abnormal procedure gives the option of shutdown or operation at reduced thrust. Maybe this should be changed to a mandatory shutdown. Also, I have been told at the school house that these engines can operate with zero oil pressure for 30 mins. I don't think that this should be stated because it gives a false sense of security. I certainly used it in my decision making process and now I'm sorry I did. I would like to know exactly what happened to this engine and what kind of damage was done to it.

IN HINDSIGHT THOUGH, I WISHED I HAD REQUESTED CFR AND UPON REVIEW OF PART 1, I NOTED THAT AN OVERWT LNDG IS CONSIDERED AN EMER. IT'S OBVIOUS NOW THAT THE ENG SHOULD HAVE BEEN SHUT DOWN. HOWEVER, THE ABNORMAL PROC GIVES THE OPTION OF SHUTDOWN OR OP AT REDUCED THRUST. MAYBE THIS SHOULD BE CHANGED TO A MANDATORY SHUTDOWN. ALSO, I HAVE BEEN TOLD AT THE SCHOOL HOUSE THAT THESE ENGS CAN OPERATE WITH ZERO OIL PRESSURE FOR 30 MINS. I DON'T THINK THAT THIS SHOULD BE STATED BECAUSE IT GIVES A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY. I CERTAINLY USED IT IN MY DECISION MAKING PROCESS AND NOW I'M SORRY I DID. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS ENG AND WHAT KIND OF DAMAGE WAS DONE TO IT.
