Narrative:
Loss of electrical system in C172 while northwest of kazo. Commenced troubleshooting while clear of class D airspace. Reset alternator: problem recurred. Communications never re- established. Squawked loss of communications on transponder. Tried to re-establish communications. Announced intentions to land. Overflew runway, made left traffic on downwind, received light gun signals (cleared to land) from kazo tower. Landed safely. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states the loss of electrical power was caused by a defective voltage regulator which was just replaced. The reporter was advised by the FBO that they received several regulators from the manufacturer and all were bad. The FAA did not contact the reporter.

Title: A C172 ON DSCNT EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE LOSS OF ELECTRICAL PWR DUE TO A FAULTY VOLTAGE REGULATOR REQUIRING TWR LIGHT SIGNALS TO LAND.
Narrative: LOSS OF ELECTRICAL SYS IN C172 WHILE NW OF KAZO. COMMENCED TROUBLESHOOTING WHILE CLR OF CLASS D AIRSPACE. RESET ALTERNATOR: PROB RECURRED. COMS NEVER RE- ESTABLISHED. SQUAWKED LOSS OF COMS ON XPONDER. TRIED TO RE-ESTABLISH COMS. ANNOUNCED INTENTIONS TO LAND. OVERFLEW RWY, MADE L TFC ON DOWNWIND, RECEIVED LIGHT GUN SIGNALS (CLRED TO LAND) FROM KAZO TWR. LANDED SAFELY. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES THE LOSS OF ELECTRICAL PWR WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE VOLTAGE REGULATOR WHICH WAS JUST REPLACED. THE RPTR WAS ADVISED BY THE FBO THAT THEY RECEIVED SEVERAL REGULATORS FROM THE MANUFACTURER AND ALL WERE BAD. THE FAA DID NOT CONTACT THE RPTR.
